I’m a little behind the news with this post but I felt the need to mark the retirement of Clare’s Frank Lohan on hurlingstats.com. Lohan made the announcement last week and he is the last of Clare’s 1995 All-Ireland winning team to hang up his hurley.
Lohan made 58 appearances for his county and hurlingstats.com has details of 26 of them going back as far as Clare’s heavy loss to Waterford in the Munster Championship in May 2004. That game was unusual for Lohan in that he played at full forward. Clare were destroyed that day but Lohan actually had a decent match and scored 3 points from play, not a bad return for a rookie full forward.
The rest of Frank’s career was spent in the full-back line, first in the corner while his brother Brian manned the edge of the square and then as full back himself when Brian retired.
Lohan was a very consistent performer and his steady presence in the full back line will be missed by the Banner.
His last match for Clare was this summer’s All-Ireland quarter final defeat to Cork.
