    2010 Fitzgibbon Cup match programme

Thirty years of hurt ended for NUI Galway on Saturday when the men from the west captured the Fitzgibbon Cup for the first time since 1980.  NUIG did it the hard way winning both the semi-final and final in extra time by a solitary point.  In the semi-final in Dangan on Friday they edged out a fancied Limerick Institute of Technology side by 1-24 to 1-23.  The final was played on Saturday afternoon in Pearse Stadium and the Galway college had to come from behind in both in normal time and in extra time to the the better of WIT.  The final score was 1-17 to 1-16.

The county breakdown of the NUIG team which won the final was:

    • 8 Galway
    • 7 Clare
    • 2 Tipperary
    • 1 Offaly

The NUIG team featured 5 of Clare under-21s who made history last September by winning the Banner’s first title at that grade.  The 5 are Donal Touhy, Domhnall O’Donovan, Cormac O’Donovan, Caimin Morey & John Conlon.

The NUIG victory was extra special for one Tony ‘Horse’ Regan who has contributed hugely to the success and development of Gaelic games in NUIG.
